Opinion: B.C. mayors and planners are raising warning signs about across-the-province upzoning of single-family lots. Still, some are cautiously optimistic.
Two top city managers from suburban Metro Vancouver caution there are at least 10 pitfalls to watch for:
- Transit needs to be handy
- Property prices will go up
- Will sewers be big enough
- Green space will be lost
- Community support for higher density could be threatened
- Skills of small-scale builders will be stretched
- City staff could be overwhelmed
- More schools and parks will be required
- Parking
- Mass upzoning is no panacea for affordability
